A New Container
//2024
A consistent stream of AR ‘experiences’ appear on a small circular platform throughout the three weeks of A New Container. Each piece the result of a daily practice of reflection and spontaneous production. 3D scans of impromptu sculptures, photos mapped to objects as material textures, and personal narratives built from various 3D assets were common approaches to this public act of journaling.
Digital artifact created for Day 11 of the project
A New Container was created for My Friend Sparksburg – a
project space run by Martin Lang in Columbia, South Carolina. The gallery takes
the form of a modest flagpole holder on the facade of a suburban brick ranch. Each day of the exhibit a new digital work was uploaded and made visible via Meta Spark Studio (an augmented reality application). In mid 2024, as I was developing the project proposal, Meta announced a massive budget cut to Reality Labs (its AR/VR arm) – and ultimately the dissolution of Meta Spark Studio. I had been working with this software on numerous projects in recent years and was disappointed by its abrupt discontinuation.
What began as an exhibition about digital journaling, 3D scanning, and the transient art object, morphed into a final project and farewell to a beloved creative platform.
